One-on-One Organizing Conversations: Between the Steps
… or, how to be an effective organizing dance partner
In our organizing conversations, we aim to have clear outcomes and authentic interactions. Regardless of the structure you follow in your one-on-ones, skills for reading people effectively, knowing when to move ahead in the conversation, and practicing curiosity are key. Without these skills, we risk misunderstanding what the person truly cares about, rushing to the ask, undermining trust, or missing opportunities for deeper relationships. If one-on-ones are like a dance, this workshop is about the ‘back-and-forth dynamic’ on the dance floor, beyond the basic dance steps.
Length: 2 hours, online
BY THE END OF THE TRAINING, YOU WILL…
- Learn how to read between the lines of what surfaces in a one-on-one, and move forward more effectively
- Deepen self awareness to avoid rushing ahead in the one-on-one and to make the most of an organizing conversation
- Understand the value of and practice open-ended questions in organizing conversations
- Practice getting to someone’s authentic self-interest or stake

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP?
This training is for community, labor, and electoral organizers across sectors and issues. We welcome new and more experienced organizers, including those who have participated in one-in-one trainings previously.
This training might be most useful for organizers in base-building organizations and campaigns who are conducting or plan to conduct cold contact recruitment (ie, door canvassing), but concepts from this training can be applied across diverse organizing scenarios. The workshop will provide relevant learning for and space to connect with organizers across various contexts.
WORKSHOP FORMAT
This is an interactive online training using the Zoom platform. Come prepared to participate fully, just as you would an in-person training. Please try to connect from a quiet place on a computer with headphones. A computer with a webcam and high-speed internet are recommended to get the most out of the training.
Details for how to connect will be sent prior to the training. The training will include follow-up resources you can use after, including handouts and a recording.
ACCESSIBILITY
This training will take place online in the Zoom meetings platform. Our trainings offer multiple ways to engage in activities and we do our best to apply best practices in visual accessibility on our slides and handouts including using high contrast and alt text. Closed captioning, sign language interpretation, and advanced copies of the slides are offered if requests are received up to 1 week before the training.
If there is anything else that would make this training more accessible to you, please email us directly or make a note in your registration form.
